Northfork Court Docket Searches
Northfork posts no public municipal docket, calendar, or payment portal on its official city pages. So the issuing authority becomes your first search field. An ordinance question starts with the Northfork municipal office. A state misdemeanor, a preliminary felony matter, or a state traffic citation usually begins with Magistrate Case Record Search, called MCR. Circuit cases, civil or criminal, go through WVPASS instead. The West Virginia Court Record Access page spells out the split between Circuit and Magistrate records.
- Read the ticket, notice, or pleading and identify Northfork, Magistrate Court, Circuit Court, Family Court, or a federal court.
- Copy the complete case number, citation ID, party spelling, filing year, and court type before searching.
- For a Northfork ordinance file, call City Hall; for a state Magistrate file, search MCR; for Circuit records, search WVPASS.
- Read the court, charge or claim, status, event, and appearance fields without treating a charge as a finding.
- Confirm the current setting and request documents from the Northfork municipal office or the proper McDowell clerk.
A blank Northfork result does not mean the case is gone. The record could sit in another court. It might be too new for the index, filed under a different spelling, sealed, expunged, confidential, or simply outside the portal's public coverage.
Northfork Court Records at Town Office
Northfork counted 231 residents in the 2020 Census. The town's official page gives PO Box 760, Northfork, WV 24868. Phone and fax are both 304-862-3414. Town-office hours run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Treat those as town office hours only. They are not a guarantee of when a Northfork court counter is open. The official Northfork elected-officials page carries these hours and the contact route.

The posted hours help you plan a trip to the town office. They do not prove a Northfork court session exists.

Inside the Northfork Municipal Court
Northfork publishes no municipal docket, calendar, or payment portal on its official pages. An ordinance matter works differently. The town office and the recorder are the practical first contacts. Give them the issuing authority, the exact identifier, the date, and the record you want. Ask how to inspect the file or get an ordinary or certified copy. The official Northfork agencies page offers contact information, not case results. State-law traffic and misdemeanor matters still route through MCR and the Magistrate Clerk. Circuit matters route through WVPASS and the Circuit Clerk. A Northfork address alone tells you little. The same goes for a police reference. Neither one, by itself, shows which system actually holds the case.
Northfork and Clark Since 1948
Northfork's own history says the town incorporated in 1901 at the north fork of the Elkhorn River. It consolidated with Clark on March 26, 1948. Those facts give the place a real municipal frame. They say nothing about present jurisdiction, a public docket, or current caseload. For current orientation, use the 2020 Census figure rather than older population or elevation language. Historic details can still help. They can describe the municipality tied to an old file or a genealogy search. But current Northfork court records stay with the current office holders. The town handles municipal matters. The Magistrate Clerk holds Magistrate documents. The Circuit Clerk keeps Circuit and Family records, subject to access limits.
Finding Northfork Court Dates
Match any date on a Northfork notice to the court that issued it. For a municipal matter, ask City Hall to confirm the setting and location. For a Magistrate matter, MCR may show an appearance date. Its accuracy and completeness warning makes clerk confirmation important. For a Circuit matter, WVPASS may display docket information and available documents. The Circuit Clerk remains reliable for a current setting.
| Date | The scheduled or recorded appearance date, which may change after a continuance. |
|---|---|
| Time | The listed time for the setting; confirm whether it is a docket call or an individual hearing. |
| Location | The municipal site or county courtroom named by the issuing office, not merely “Northfork.” |
| Judge | The judicial officer assigned in the record; verify changes through the clerk. |
| Setting Type | An appearance, arraignment, pretrial event, hearing, trial, or other court-defined event. |
WVPASS sends no notifications. A recent reset, cancellation, or order may call for direct confirmation even when your Northfork search shows an older setting.
Northfork State Cases Need MCR
MCR is a statewide public route to Magistrate case information, not a Northfork-only database. You can search by case number, name, or date. A public result can show plenty. It may list party role, filing date, case type, agency, citation, charge, plea, and disposition. Appearance date, financial summary, and case events may appear as well. Name searches cap at 30 results. A full case number helps a lot with a common name.
- Case ID
- The court's identifier, such as the observed format 25-M17F-00437; use the value exactly as printed.
- Citation
- A charging reference that may differ from the case number and from a payment-plan identifier.
- Appearance Date
- A useful lead for a Northfork court date, not a promise that the setting remains unchanged.
- Disposition
- A recorded outcome that must be read at the charge and case level before calling it final.
MCR gives you case information, not downloadable documents. For an ordinary or certified copy from a Northfork-area Magistrate file, contact the Magistrate Clerk at 105 Wyoming Street.
Northfork Traffic Ticket Lookups
A Northfork traffic ticket lands in one of two systems. It may be a municipal ordinance case through City Hall, or a state-law Magistrate case. The agency and the court named on the citation tell you which. State citations can be searched in MCR. Payments work through the Magistrate Court Payment System. It looks up cases by exact Citation ID, Case ID, or Payment Plan ID. Each payment carries a $2 WV.gov fee. Those identifiers are not interchangeable. Enter the one printed on your own paperwork. Contesting the ticket is a different track. Follow the court notice, and get current instructions from the issuing Northfork court. The payment screen is not a hearing waiver. A Northfork ordinance question belongs with City Hall. State case questions go to the Magistrate Clerk. The countywide split is laid out in the McDowell County traffic court resource.
Northfork Copies Come from Custodians
An online Northfork result is usually an index or an electronic copy. It is not automatically a certified record. For Circuit files, you can inspect public materials at the Circuit Clerk's office. You can also use WVPASS for public electronic records, call 304-436-8535, or mail a focused written request once you confirm the route. WVPASS lists public Circuit documents at $0.25 per page. West Virginia Code §59-1-11 separately sets $1 per page for copies the clerk makes for use outside the office. Actual postage is added on top.
Ask the receiving agency what it actually needs: a plain copy, a certified copy, a transcript, or an electronic file. Confirm the certified-copy surcharge before you pay. The clerk provides access and copies. But the clerk does not summarize a case by phone or give legal advice. In every request, include the exact style, number, year, court, and document title.
How Northfork Cases Reach the County
Northfork city government does not handle every dispute that starts inside the city. Magistrate Court takes limited civil matters, misdemeanors, preliminary felony proceedings, state traffic cases, and bail. Circuit Court is the general-jurisdiction court for the county. It also reviews certain lower-court decisions. Family Court covers divorce, custody, support, and other domestic relations. Its underlying files carry special access limits, though.
Docket flow: Northfork Municipal Court › McDowell County Courts › Circuit Court
Treat that outline as a routing aid. Not every Northfork case moves through all three courts. A state Magistrate case can simply stay there unless someone appeals. A felony travels through preliminary proceedings toward Circuit Court. A Circuit civil action can begin at that level from day one. And a federal matter never reaches Wyoming Street just because it arose in Northfork; McDowell federal cases route to the Southern District of West Virginia's Bluefield Division.
Northfork Family Access Boundaries
A Northfork case lookup that points to Family Court calls for different expectations. Orders and indices are public under Family Court Rule 6. The rest of the file generally is not. Pleadings, exhibits, recordings, transcripts, and much of the underlying material stay confidential. Family hearings are not open by default. The McDowell county contact is 304-436-6943. The official Family Court listing also gives a Princeton office at 120 Scott Street, 304-487-8423.
Do not overread a blank result. A Northfork family record may be limited by the court level, online coverage, confidentiality, sealing, or the spelling used. Ask the Circuit Clerk what public order or index is available.
Requesting an authorized recording means a written request through the Circuit Clerk. Identify the case style and date. Restricted material stays restricted even after an order shows up in an index; child, medical, educational, support, and domestic-violence-shelter records do not become public by appearing there.
Who Can See Northfork Court Records
West Virginia's court-record statutes come first for Northfork court files. West Virginia Code §51-4-2 opens court records and papers to any person, subject to stated exceptions, and directs the clerk to furnish copies. Preservation and authorized destruction are governed by §51-4-3. Neither statute forces open a sealed file. Expungements, juvenile protection, Family Court confidentiality, and other limiting statutes still control.
Key rules:
West Virginia Code §51-4-2 establishes public inspection and copy access for court records subject to lawful exceptions.
West Virginia FOIA §29B-1-3 governs requests to custodians for public administrative records and sets a response framework.
Family Court Rule 6 separates public orders and indices from confidential family-file material.
For a Northfork court filing, start with the court clerk and the court-record rules. A municipal administrative record is a different animal. Send that request under WV FOIA to the office that actually holds the record. Ask for permitted inspection, an electronic copy when practical, or a certified copy. Let the office explain any lawful withholding.
Northfork Circuit Searches in WVPASS
WVPASS went live statewide for public Circuit Court access in March 2025. A Northfork Circuit search runs without an account when you only need public case detail. Buying documents takes the portal's account and payment steps. The service covers every West Virginia county, so pick McDowell and confirm the Circuit Court context before trusting a hit. A same-name record from another county is easy to mistake for the Northfork matter.
Search with the most exact identifier you have. Then save the case number, court, party role, filing date, and event text that got you there. WVPASS sends no case notifications. Public electronic coverage does not reach every sealed or nonpublic document either. For a recent order, a court date, or certification, take the WVPASS lead to the Circuit Clerk. Do not treat the screen as the final word.
